It's okay for ocean cargo to fall off ships. While the urban myth says there are 10000 lost containers annually, it's more like 546 of the 120 million container movements that fall into the drink. Even less likely is piracy. Horn of Africa, Gulf of Guinea, and the Malacca Strait have been hotspots in recent years.
Ocean Freight Services
Ocean and sea freight services are further divided into two categories: full container loads (FCL) and less than container loads (LCLs). A LCL container contains several shipments packed together. The forwarder has additional work to do, there's extra paperwork, and there's the physical work of consolidating multiple shipments into one container before the main transit, and then de-combining the shipments once they reach their destination. This gives LCL three disadvantages:

FCL shipments are delivered faster than LCL shipments. An additional one to two weeks is typically recommended for LCL.


Standard Shipping Damage, misplacing, and loss are risky with LCL.
LCL costs more per cubic meter.
As shipping rates are lower for FCL, you may want to use a full container once your shipment reaches a certain size, even if your goods don't fill the container. The tipping point for upgrading from LCL to FCL (those are the smallest sized containers) is in the range of 15 cubic meters.


Sea Freight Rates per kg
Except for particularly heavy goods, LCL is mostly priced per volume, not by weight.

Choose the most cost-effective mode for your product using these rules of thumb:

If the shipment weighs more than 500 kg, air freight becomes uneconomic.
Shipments from China to the US take 30-40 days and cost around $2-$4 / kg.
Using air freight for a China-US shipment between 150 kg and 500 kg costs about $5-8 per kilo and can take 8-10 days.
Express air freight can be faster, but is more expensive.
The cost of couriering a package less than 150 kg is economic (express freight).
