What is the cheapest shipping option to Europe from TopAlpha?

The time to consider ocean freight comes when you are shipping freight in high volumes. Here's your ocean guide, from choosing the right mode to calculating shipping costs and transit times.

Ocean Freight Meaning: What Is Ocean Freight?
Shipping containers are used in ocean freight transport.

Importers and exporters most commonly use ocean freight as their mode of transport. 90% of all cargo is shipped via ocean freight or sea freight. Other modes of international freight transportation, like courier, air freight, and express air freight, may be faster, but are also more expensive. These other modes of transportation are generally used for smaller shipments and for high-value products.

In cases where ocean freight would be too slow and air freight too expensive, some freight forwarders offer express shipping. Although nearly as fast as air freight, this option may be less expensive. Streamlining ocean freight processes and connecting only with faster ocean services and premium trucking services are at the heart of this solution.

Why Ship By Sea?

The container holds a whopping 10000 beer bottles! And ocean freight is cheaper. Air freight is too costly for shipments weighing more than 500 kg. With this chargeable weight calculator, you can find out whether you will be charged by the actual weight or dimensional weight for your shipment. Our FBX index provides live rates for international shipping.
In the case of dangerous goods, international law, national law, carrier organization regulations, and individual carrier regulations all play a role in restricting and defining who can transport them. There are generally more restrictions on air freight than on ocean freight, including: gases (e.g. lamp bulbs), all things flammable (e.g. Items that are toxic or corrosive (e.g., perfume, Samsung Galaxy Note 7). batteries), magnetic substances (e.g. Speakers), oxidizers, and biochemical products (for instance, chemical medicines), and public health risks (for example, pollution). untanned hides). The Hazardous Material Table contains more information.
Seaborne CO2 emissions are minuscule in comparison with airborne CO2 emissions. The research found that for 5000 kilometers of ocean freight, each ton will generate 150 kilograms of CO2 emissions, while air freight emits 6605 kilograms of CO2.

What Are The Downsides Of Ocean Freight?
Planes are 30 times faster than ocean liners. Aircraft can cruise at 575 mph, while ocean liners operate at 16-18 mph. Obviously, shipping goods by air freight from China to the US takes at least 20 days longer than by ocean freight.
There are generally more days spent on ocean freight than on air freight due to port congestion, customs delays, and bad weather conditions. Air freight tracking technology is often more advanced than ocean freight tracking. economy international shipping So ocean freight is more likely to be misplaced than air freight. The situation is especially difficult when the shipment is less than a container load. Due to digitization, ocean freight has become more reliable.
Ocean freight has a higher likelihood of getting damaged or destroyed than air freight. Ships are more likely to move since they are in transit for longer. Do not worry too much about ocean cargo falling off of ships. According to urban myth, ten thousand containers per year are lost in the drink, but actually it's more like 546 of 120 million movements per year. Even less likely is piracy. The Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Malacca Straits have been hot spots in recent years.
Ocean Freight Services
A full container load (FCL) and a less than container load (LCL) are two additional options in ocean and sea freight services. LCL involves packing several shipments into one container. For the forwarder, it involves more paperwork as well as the physical work of consolidating various shipments into a container before the main transit and de-consolidating those shipments at the other end. This gives LCL three disadvantages:

Delivery of LCL shipments takes longer than FCL shipments. Normally, it is recommended that you allow one or two weeks for LCL.
Damage, misplacing, and loss are risky with LCL.
LCL costs more per cubic meter.
As shipping rates are lower for FCL, it may be worth using a full container once your shipment is large enough, even if you do not intend to fill the container completely. LCL to FCL upgrades are typically achieved at a point around 15 cubic meters (the smallest size container is a 20 footer).

Sea Freight Rates per kg
With the exception of particularly heavy goods, LCL is usually priced by volume, rather than by weight.

If selecting the most cost-effective mode is a challenge, consider these general rules of thumb:

A shipment weighing more than 500 kg becomes uneconomical to ship by air.
Shipments from China to the United States take about 30-40 days by ocean freight.
Using air freight for a China-US shipment between 150 kg and 500 kg costs about $5-8 per kilo and can take 8-10 days.
Express air freight can be faster, but is more expensive.
Those packages weighing less than 150 kg are best transported by courier (express freight).

Other modes of international freight transportation, like courier, air freight, and express air freight, may be faster, but are also more expensive. In general, smaller shipments, and products of a high value, must be shipped by these other methods.

For those whose air freight is too expensive but ocean shipping too slow, freight forwarders offer express shipping. The service is frequently just as fast as air freight, but may be less expensive. It ties in with expedited ocean services and premium trucking services and streamlines ocean freight processes.

Why Ship By Sea?

In addition to international law, national law, carrier organization regulations, and individual carrier regulations, all contribute to defining and restricting what goods are considered dangerous for transportation. What Are The Downsides Of Ocean Freight?
Speed aircraft are about 30 times faster than ocean liners; passenger jets cruise at 575 mph, while ocean liners steam at 16-18 mph. Thus, it should come as no surprise that an air freight shipment from China to the US usually takes 20 days longer than an ocean freight shipment.
Ocean freight generally takes much longer to deliver than air freight because of port congestion, customs delays, and bad weather conditions. Air freight tracking technology is often more advanced than ocean freight tracking technology. Therefore, ocean freight is more likely to get lost than air freight. The rates are especially high when the shipment is less than a container load. With that said, ocean freight is becoming more reliable due to digitization.
In contrast to air cargo, ocean freight is more likely to be damaged or destroyed. The reason is the longer transit time, and the fact that ships travel more often. Don't worry too much about ocean cargo falling off ships. A common urban myth claims 10000 containers are lost each year, but it's more like 546 of 120 million containers a year that fall into the drink. Even less likely is piracy. Recently, hot spots have included the Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Malacca Straits.
Ocean Freight Services
Shipping services by sea can be divided into two categories: a full container load (FCL) and a less than container load (LCL). One container is used for several shipments in LCL. For the forwarder, it involves more paperwork as well as the physical work of consolidating various shipments into a container before the main transit and de-consolidating those shipments at the other end. This gives LCL three disadvantages:

LCL shipments take longer to deliver than FCL shipments. LCL usually has to be extended by one or two weeks.
It is possible to damage, misplace, or even lose LCL products.
LCL costs more per cubic meter.

The shipping costs for FCL are lower, so using a full container may be the best choice if your shipment is large enough, even if your goods don't fill the entire container. The tipping point between LCL and FCL (the smallest sized container is a 20 footer) is somewhere around 15 cubic meters.

Sea Freight Rates per kg
With the exception of especially heavy goods, most LCLs are priced per volume of goods, rather than weight.

You can use these guidelines to choose the cost-effective mode for most products:

Shipments over 500 kg are not economically feasible by air.
The shipping cost for China-US shipments is approximately $2-$4 / kg, and the shipping will take anywhere from 30-40 days.
Using air freight for a China-US shipment between 150 kg and 500 kg costs about $5-8 per kilo and can take 8-10 days.
A few days faster, but more expensive, is express air freight.
The cost of shipping lighter packages (express freight) is lower than for heavier packages (courier).

When you start shipping freight in high volumes, you should think about ocean freight. Here are your directions on everything related to shipping by ocean, from picking the mode that's right for you to calculating transit times and costs.

Ocean Freight Meaning: What Is Ocean Freight?
Shipment of goods by sea via shipping containers is known as ocean freight transport.

The most common means of transport used by importers and exporters is by ocean. 90% of all goods are shipped via ocean freight and sea freight. There are other modes of international freight transport (courier, standard air freight, express air freight) that are faster, but they are also more expensive. Other modes of shipping are typically used for small shipments and goods with high value.

For those whose air freight is too expensive but ocean shipping too slow, freight forwarders offer express shipping. As fast as air freight, but at a lower price, this is often the most cost-effective option. Streamlining ocean freight processes and partnering only with fast ocean and premium trucking services is how it works.

What Are The Downsides Of Ocean Freight?

Compared to ocean liners, speed planes travel at about 30 times the speed. Airliners cruise at 575 mph, while ocean liners move at 16-18 mph. There is no surprise then that a shipment going by air freight from China to the US usually takes at least 20 days longer.
The reliability of ocean freight is often compromised by port congestion, customs delays, and bad weather conditions. The tracking technology used by air cargo is often far more advanced than that used by ocean freight. It means that ocean freight is more likely to be misplaced than air freight. The rates are especially high when the shipment is less than a container load. The digitization of ocean freight is making it more reliable.
Ocean freight is more susceptible to damage or destruction than air freight. It's because it's in transit for a longer period of time and because ships are more likely to move. You shouldn't worry too much about cargo falling from ships. There are a lot more lost containers than the urban myth claims, as 546 out of 120 million movements fall into the ocean each year. Even less likely is piracy. Some recent hotspots have included the Horn of Africa, the Gulf of Guinea, and the Malacca Straits.
Ocean Freight Services
Further, sea freight is broken down into two options: full container loads (FCL) and less than container loads (LCL). LCL involves packing several shipments into one container. The forwarder has more work to do, there is extra paperwork to be filed, along with the physical work of consolidating various shipments into one container before the main transit and dissolving the consolidation at the other end. This gives LCL three disadvantages:

The delivery time of an LCL shipment is longer than that of an FCL shipment. One or two extra weeks for LCL are typically recommended.
The use of LCL comes with an increased risk of damage, misplacement, and loss.
LCL costs more per cubic meter.

Considering the lower shipping rates for full containers, it might be worth using a full container once your shipment is large enough, even if your goods don't fill a full container. There is a point where upgrading from LCL to FCL (the smallest sized container is a 20 footer) occurs around 15 cubic meters.

Sea Freight Rates per kg
Except for particularly heavy items, LCL is typically priced per volume, not by weight.

You can use these guidelines to choose the cost-effective mode for most products:

The cost of air freight increases dramatically over 500 kg.
A China-US shipment can take up to 40 days or more by ocean freight, which generally costs $2-$4 per kg.
A China-US shipment between 150 kg and 500 kg costs $5-8 per kilogram and takes 8-10 days via air freight.
It is faster to ship by express air freight, but it is more expensive.
If your packages are lighter than 150 kg, you can go by courier (express freight).
